Common to all heart problems is the possibility of the heart failing to adequately pump the blood to the rest of the body (congestive heart failure ). The heart’s inability to pump all the blood that reaches it creates a bottleneck effect, which leads to fluid accumulation in the lungs or body. The symptoms of heart failure depend on which side of the heart is affected.

Other blood vessel problems include a blockage (deep vein thrombosis ) or bulge (aneurysm ) in the vessel. Vessels can also become inflamed. An inflamed vein (phlebitis ) is usually a problem involving just one part of a single vein. Inflammation of several blood vessels (vasculitis ) can present in many different ways, depending on the type of vessels affected.
